Tattoo Removal Q & A

by Gail Yohe, DO

How does tattoo removal work?

For the 25% of all Americans who aren’t happy with their tattoo, laser tattoo removal may be the solution you’re looking for. Laser tattoo removal uses a laser light source to break up the pigment in your skin. Depending on the size and colors of your tattoo, you may require from a few to several laser treatments.

Although many lasers work well on black tattoos, it’s been a challenge for medical professionals to remove tattoos pigmented with other colors. More recently, the advanced technology of the Cutera® enlighten™ laser has made it possible to remove a more diverse range of pigment colors and sizes.

How does the enlighten laser remove tattoos?

The enlighten laser system uses “picosecond” laser energy to break down ink colors under your skin. A picosecond is one-trillionth of a second, which means the enlighten laser pulses are 1,000 times shorter than the typical “nanosecond” lasers that many professionals use to remove tattoos. Since enlighten uses picoseconds, Dr. Yohe is able to remove tattoos more thoroughly and often with fewer treatment sessions than with traditional laser technologies.

Is tattoo removal painful?

As with many laser treatments, enlighten laser tattoo removal feels most like a rubber band snapping against your skin. If you have a very large tattoo you’d like removed, Dr. Yohe or one of her assistants may offer a topical or local anesthetic to minimize any prolonged discomfort. In most procedures using the enlighten system, pain is minimal — and significantly less intense than with traditional lasers.

What are the side effects of laser tattoo removal?

Since the enlighten laser only affects the pigment in the tattoo that is under the surface of your skin, the surrounding skin is not damaged. It’s a safe, effective treatment to permanently remove your tattoo. Minimal side effects may include temporary redness or swelling in the treatment area and usually go away after a short time.

Because the enlighten laser system is gentle, there is no downtime, either. You can resume your regular activities after a treatment session. If you’ve been considering tattoo removal, Dr. Yohe invites you to call or schedule a consultation online to learn more about the benefits of the enlighten laser system.
