Eight Tips to Prevent Packing on Weight While You’re on Vacation

Pastries at breakfast, a treat for lunch, and a leisurely dinner, and before you know it you’ve returned from vacation five pounds heavier. Vacation is a time to take a break from the daily grind and recharge, but it doesn’t mean abandoning all of your health-conscious habits while you’re away. Try these tips to keep weight gain at bay so you can enjoy a guilt-free vacation.

Tip #1: Book a room with a kitchenette or mini-fridge

A living space that’s drastically different from what you’re used to at home can make it difficult to eat normally while on vacation. To make it easier, book a room with a kitchenette. When that’s not an option, request a mini-fridge for your room. This is a common request that most hotels can easily accommodate. You can store fresh fruits and vegetables to snack on, so you don’t go overboard on indulgences or hit the vending machine at midnight.

Tip #2: Stay active

There’s nothing wrong with kicking back and relaxing while on vacation. However, to balance things out, plan fun activities that get you moving. Depending on where you spend your time away you can plan hikes, swimming, sightseeing, kayaking, and more.

Tip #3: Go easy on alcohol

Too many drinks is a surefire way to pack on pounds. A glass of wine or cocktail here or there is unlikely to cause problems as long as you adjust your intake to make room. Be mindful of alcohol consumption and limit yourself to a moderate amount.

Tip #4: Avoid multitasking

It’s easy to grab a bite to eat at a food cart while strolling the sights and taking it all in. However, dividing your attention when you’re eating can easily lead to overconsumption. It’s necessary to remain aware of what and how much you’re eating. Plan your meals and snacks at a time when you can sit down and eat mindfully.

Tip #5: Avoid theme park meals

Whether it’s a funnel cake or a deep-fried turkey leg, theme park items are notorious for containing extremely high amounts of fat and sugar. While those fried macaroni and cheese bites may look tempting, you’ll have a difficult time avoiding weight gain if you indulge. It’s best to skip theme park meals altogether.

Tip #6: Stay hydrated

Hydration is a key part of keeping yourself healthy, even while on vacation. Thirst is often easily mistaken for hunger and can cause you to eat more than necessary. It’s a good idea to carry a bottle of water with you, as it’s easy to get busy having fun and forget to stay hydrated while on vacation. Keep water bottles in your room and in your bag at all times.

Tip #7: Get in the sharing spirit

When you choose to indulge in a rich dessert, instead of eating the entire portion, share it with a companion or divide it into smaller portions and save the rest for another day of the trip. If you control your portion sizes, you can still indulge without worrying about packing on pounds.

Tip #8: Create a meal strategy

You may have heard the term “fail to plan and you plan to fail.” This is just a way of saying that you’re more likely to succeed at something if you create a plan of action ahead of time. If you want to keep from packing on pounds while away, create a meal strategy before embarking on your vacation. Decide what you’ll splurge on ahead of time and plan to mix in healthy meals each day to create balance.
